Gilad Atzmon's New Book: The Wandering Who? A Study Of Jewish Identity Politics

Jewish identity is tied up with some of the most difficult and contentious issues of today. The purpose in this book is to open many of these issues up for discussion. Since Israel defines itself openly as the ‘Jewish State’, we should ask what the notions of ’Judaism’, ‘Jewishness’, ‘Jewish culture’ and ‘Jewish ideology’ stand for. Gilad examines the tribal aspects embedded in Jewish secular discourse, both Zionist and anti Zionist; the ‘holocaust religion’; the meaning of ‘history’ and ‘time’ within the Jewish political discourse; the anti-Gentile ideologies entangled within different forms of secular Jewish political discourse and even within the Jewish left. He questions what it is that leads Diaspora Jews to identify themselves with Israel and affiliate with its politics. The devastating state of our world affairs raises an immediate demand for a conceptual shift in our intellectual and philosophical attitude towards politics, identity politics and history.

Artist of the Month - Hisham Zreiq

http://www.thisweekinpalestine.com/details.php?id=3686&ed=205&edid=205

Hisham Zreiq (Zrake) was born in 1968 in Nazareth to a Palestinian family. After finishing school, he studied computer science, and now works as a software developer, but his heart is where his art is. In 1991, he started doing computer animation. He used those same tools when he started doing graphic art using the computer in 1994. In 1996, he started exhibiting his work in galleries and museums. In March 2001, he went to Germany, where he now lives with his wife and son and works as a software architect, artist, and filmmaker.

In 2006, he started his film career with the documentary, The sons of Eilaboun, and in 2009 he made his first short fiction film Just another day, followed by Before You is the Sea in 2011.

Zreiq’s art is his perspective on life, pains, disappointments, happiness, and his philosophical look at life. He uses extensive symbolism and metaphors in both his visual art and films. One example is the cross that symbolises punishment and sacrifice, as Jesus was punished and sacrificed his life. His art is somehow surrealist, and looks like it was extracted from a dream-like world. The intensity of emotions cannot be ignored, and captures the eyes of viewers, encouraging their minds to wander. His pieces are powered by strong composition and powerful representation of colour.

There Is No Military Option in Iran

Haaretz and Ynet reported today that “Iran could recover from attack on its nuclear sites within six months”

U.S. congressional report admits that Israel and U.S. do not know the exact location of Iran nuclear facilities.

“The report by analysts at the Congressional Research Service, citing interviews with current and former U.S. officials, said that the Islamic Republic’s centrifuge “workshops” are widely dispersed and hidden, which could complicate a potential Israeli military strike.”

Iran denies suspicions that it is seeking nuclear weapons capability. It seems that once again Israeli decision makers  project their deadly inclinations on the Iranian regime.

David Rovics: Disavowing Disavowal - In Defense of Gilad Atzmon

Introduction by GA: The support of David Rovics, whom I admire, is very significant to me. I will be sharing a platform with David this Saturday in Bristol’s Art Against the War, yet until a week ago I wasn’t aware at all of David’s attitude towards my thoughts and writings. However, at the peak of the campaign against my book, David wrote to me. Like others he also was asked to join one of those ADLs (Atzmon Defamation Leagues).  Seemingly he didn’t.

I believe that David’s support should be realised as a crucial call for us all to unite. The battle against Israel, Zionism and the Lobby must be an open discourse. Freedom of expression and thought are the most precious values at the heart of the battle for truth, justice and peace. Those who believe in One State from the river to the sea should adhere to principles of inclusiveness.

Disavowing Disavowal: In Defense of Gilad Atzmon

David RovicsI've been on a concert tour in Europe, so far mostly in Great Britain, for the past month or so. There's nothing like being on tour to connect on a personal, face-to-face level with society, or at least the little subsets of society who come to my shows. Being a songwriter who writes songs about the Palestinian struggle, among other subjects, many of my shows around the world are organized by Palestine solidarity activists of one kind or another. Before the tour began I was getting occasional emails from people asking me whether I wanted to add my name to a group denunciation of jazz musician, blogger and author Gilad Atzmon. Denounce him for what, I asked. For being an anti-Semite, they replied. I'd then ask them to send me what he wrote that they found offensive, which they would then do (sometimes accompanied by an introductory essay explaining the distinction between anti-Zionsim and anti-Semitism). I'd then read every word, and each time, I'd fail to find the anti-Semitic bit. Then, ten days into my tour, the US Palestinian Community Network published a "Disavowal of the Racism and Antisemitism of Gilad Atzmon." Several of the signatories include Palestinian intellectuals and activists I know and admire.

Before and especially after their denunciation of Atzmon was published, several of my gigs in England and Scotland have included people handing out printed copies of the disavowal and telling me and other people in no uncertain terms that Atzmon is an anti-Semite, may be a Mossad agent, and may be (or is, depending on who you ask) a holocaust denier. ("Which holocaust" is not an appropriate question, so don't even think about asking. Just the question alone is enough to get you accused of being a denier in some quarters.)

Well, all the attention Atzmon was getting prompted me to fork up $9.99 for my first electronic book (and I'm very thankful that something got me to read a book again, as somehow or other it's been ages). I'm not a scholar, but I am an avid student of history and politics, and I thought Atzmon's book, The Wandering Who?, was a very thought-provoking read. There weren't any particularly new ideas in it, but it was a very well-organized, well-articulated, contemporary and at times, humorous 200-page analysis of Jewish identity.

Jewish Survival Greatest Miracle in History

Itroduction be GA: The following is taken from Arutz 7,  the Israeli right wing news outlet. It is a glimpse into Jewish supremacy and exeptionalism. It also proves a clear continuum between  Jewish right wing nationalist and expansionist philosophy and some Rabbinical teaching.

Jewish Survival Greatest Miracle in History

South Africa's Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein: Jewish survival in the sweep of history is a greater miracle than the Red Sea splitting.

South Africa's Chief Rabbi Warren Goldstein's message for Passover is that Jewish survival is the greatest open miracle in history.

"To see the Jewish people alive and well and thriving is to witness a greater miracle than even the splitting of the sea," Rabbi Goldstein said, quoting Torah luminary Rabbi Yaakov Emden. The Book of Exodus describes the miraculous splitting of the Red Sea to allow the Jews to cross it while walking on dry land, thereby escaping the Egyptians.

Interview with Gilad Atzmon by Prof. Norton Mezvinsky-Washington Report

Introduction by Gilad Atzmon: One could imagine how delighted I was to be interviewed (and grilled) by Prof. Norton Mezvinsky whom I admire for years. Prof. Mezvinsky is an observant Jew, he is also one of the world leading scholars on Jewish history, Zionism and Jewish identity politics. He has written numerous books, articles and book reviews that deal with various aspects of the Arab-Israeli conflict and Zionism. He is the co-author of Jewish Fundamentalism in Israel, which he wrote with Israel Shahak. Beside the intellectual engagement, I must also mention that Norton is an incredible spirit and one of the most charming people I have ever come across.

It goes without saying that I was thrilled to meet and to be questioned by the legendary Helen Thomas. I will use this opportunity to thank the outstanding Washington Report  and the other  incredible organisations and individuals who orgenised, endorsed and supported my last USA truth seeking mission into a great success.

Engaging Gilad Atzmon

Israeli-born Gilad Atzmon, one of Europe’s finest jazz musicians, was in Washington, DC for the first time at the end of a multi-city North American grassroots tour to discuss his recently published and highly controversial book, The Wandering Who? A Study of Jewish Identity Politics.

On March 14, Atzmon was interviewed by Prof. Norton Mezvinsky, Connecticut State University Professor of History Emeritus, at Washington’s Mount Vernon Place United Methodist Church. The previous day a letter signed by 23 Palestinian activists called for “the disavowal of the racism and anti-Semitism of Gilad Atzmon.”

Watch the video of the Atzmon addressing the charges frequently levied against him. Decide for yourself—should Atzmon continue his frank discussion of Jewish identity or should his voice be silenced?

The Washington Report believes that no writer or thinker should be shunned in the United States—or anywhere—and we stand by our decision to host his DC events.
